Why 9 ball is so important to your business…

The other day, I was hanging out at my good friend’s office at Learric Media.  He has a sweet pool table in the office and we started to play some nine ball.  I’ve had a pool table since I was a kid, so my skills are pretty good with the game.  I win most games I play… but today it was a little different.  Even though I ended up hitting in nearly every ball, I was still losing a lot.

Nine ball is a special kind of game.  The rules of the game state you have to hit each ball in order (1 through 9)… or you can combo the target ball into the 9 and win automatically.  Overall, the goal of the game is to get the nine ball into the hole and you win.  Every game, I was running the table 1-8… but I would miss the damn 9 ball.  My buddy, Rick, came in with one shot every time and sank the game winning shot just letting me do all the hard work.

I was also deep into a product launch at the time and it was on my mind heavily.  This game of nine ball really connected with the winning formula to launching for me.  To win at nine ball, it doesn’t matter how many balls you hit in… it matters which ONE you hit in.

If you think about it, this is the same for most aspects of your business.  Since I was into my launch, I was thinking mostly about affiliate outreach.  Affiliates definitely fit this quote spot on.  I’ve had some launches where I have 100 affiliates on board… and I end up selling 100 total copies.  On the other hand, I’ve had launches that have 1 affiliate on board and we sell 500+ copies on the first day.

It all comes down to how important that 1 ball is to the game… can you sink it?  When reaching out to affiliates, these launch calenders are great places to get your word out there… but it’s more like throwing chum into the water just waiting for the fish to come take a bit.

The better way to go about growing your business is finding those few relationships that are going to help you win the game every time you sink it.  Make friends who talk to the same audience as you and who are looking for your knowledge to help take their business to the next level.  This is your nine ball.
